You may not realize that depression and anxiety disorder are two different conditions but they can both exist at the same time and many of the symptoms overlap and can intertwine over time. Over half of the people who suffer from depression also have anxiety. Every year, nearly 10% of Americans suffer from anxiety and depression. That is around 18 million people which at first seems to be hard to grasp.

Depression is a serious illness and is the most common type of mental illness. It is the result of negative and incorrect thinking patterns causing mood disturbances, which not only impairs a person’s daily life but can also lead to a host of other health problems. Anxiety is an emotional state where you feel frightened, worried and confused relating to a perceived or actual threat. Depression can lead to anxiety, and depression to anxiety.

When you are anxious or depressed, it often feels like help is out of reach or impossible to attain. People  frequently feel lost; not knowing where to turn to next. Unfortunately, many become trapped in a vicious cycle of depression and ultimately give up on the battle but there are many approaches to handle anxiety and depression.

Treatments for depression and anxiety disorder:

It is always recommended to talk with a doctor about symptoms and treatments. A doctor might suggest taking prescribed medication, talking to others more positively, keeping a journal to track thoughts, seeking therapy, eating healthy and exercising, or meditating, in order to deal with anxiety attacks and depression. The most common method of dealing with anxiety and depression is therapy.

Therapy – Participating in therapy helps people cope with their issues by helping them understand why they have the issues to begin with. It is an outlet for someone suffering from depression and/or anxiety disorder by opening up to another person on a regular basis. Sometimes it is easier to talk to a therapist instead of a friend or a family member because therapists give positive, objective views and possess more understanding. People who know you personally will find it difficult to give unbiased advice.

Medications – Current prescribed medications that treat anxiety and depression are safer and more effective than past medications used to be. Despite this, medications still pose risks and deadly side effects. The purpose of prescribed medical depression and anxiety pills is to produce more natural chemicals in the brain to rehabilitate the brain’s chemical balance, all while relieving depression. The decision has to be made whether the side affects are worth the benefits.

Meditation – Another way to deal with depression and anxiety disorder is meditation. While the body is relaxing, it releases tension from the mind. Relaxation using meditation is a natural way to treat symptoms of depression.  It’s not always easy at first but if you persist you will gain a great deal of relief.

Nutrition and Exercise – Eating healthy foods is essential for maintaining body functions. Foods such as whole grain carbohydrates will help you maintain energy levels and help prevent depression and anxiety disorder. Exercising naturally releases serotonin into the brain; which enhances mood. Try exercising out of doors like walking near beautiful places such as near rivers and creeks as running water is very soothing to the soul. The beach is another powerful but soothing place to walk.

Other techniques to try – Writing in a journal or diary also helps release stress and tension. Write without thinking and just let the words flow. Changing your daily routines, job or your living arrangements can also help to change mood and prevent depression.

Therapy, prescription medications, meditating, eating healthily, exercising, keeping a diary and changing your environment are just some of the many ways to deal with depression and anxiety disorders. Before engaging in any activity however, it is best to consult a doctor. The final good news is that there are attainable methods and treatments for everyone.
